Happy 80th Birthday Grammy!

Jean Renoir said, “The advantage of being eighty years old is that one has many people to love.” I think the opposite is true as well; at eighty years old, my Grammy has many people who love her.

Two weekends ago, my parents threw a huge joint birthday party/family reunion for my 80-year-old Grandma. My mom’s entire immediate family and many members of her extended family came in from all over the country to celebrate. It was a 2 day event, which included an evening of appetizers and playing pool, a golf outing (in the rain), a luncheon hosted by the birthday girl herself, and culminated in a full-on birthday bash.

My mom had the entire house decked out for the occasion, and she completely transformed the basement for the main event.

My aunt made my Grammy a “money tree” – a family tradition for 80th birthdays! The branches held 80 one dollar bills.

We had a traditional birthday cake, as well as the old favorite: the “Grammy making a gang symbol” cake.

There was lots of love – everyone appreciated the chance to catch up with each other. After dinner, we had an open-mic time and people shared their favorite memories of Grammy. There were a few teary eyes and lots of laughs. What’s a good party without a roast?

And like all good family reunions…we couldn’t resist 45 minutes of group photos out in the cold…Happy Birthday Grammy! We love you!
